PCS recently signed a contract with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to renew the Project B.A.S.I.C. program for another three years through June 30, 2027.
The Better Attitudes and Skills in Children (B.A.S.I.C) program is a school-based mental health early intervention and prevention service program in which a Child Developmental Specialist (CDS) works in an elementary school with children in Kindergarten through Third Grade (K-3). Program activities include mental health education, early identification and intervention, teacher consultation, and school climate enhancement to promote social-emotional development in early childhood years using established Pyramid Model strategies, Pyramid Model Inventory of Practices, and established B.A.S.I.C practices. The Pyramid Model was developed by the Center for the Social Emotional Foundations of Early Learning and consists of Evidence-Based Practice strategies and coaching tools. The CDS staff serve as liaisons between families, schools, and primary mental health service providers.
PCS partners with four school districts through the Project B.A.S.I.C program: Fayette County Schools, Dyersburg City Schools, Lauderdale County Schools, and Haywood County Schools. PCS has partnered with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to provide Project B.A.S.I.C services since 1992.
Demetric Adams is the PCS Project B.A.S.I.C Team Coordinator and a CDS for Haywood County Schools. Adams said, "Our team is thankful for allowing Project B.A.S.I.C. to continue assisting PCS in serving these wonderful school districts. Our team strives daily to be difference-makers, someone who can make a big difference in the world with just a few words and actions. We aim to be enthusiastic people dedicated to improving the lives of the students we serve and who have the power to inspire and encourage each child to bring about a positive change. Let a smile be your bridge”.
