Fatal fentanyl overdoses are down in every state

For the first time since the fentanyl crisis began, all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia are experiencing a decline in fatal overdoses.

According to a March 2025 NPR report, overall drug deaths have dropped by approximately 25%, with fentanyl-related fatalities decreasing by over 30% in a single year.

Experts attribute this encouraging trend to several factors: increased availability of naloxone (Narcan), shifts in drug use behaviors, and a decrease in the potency of street fentanyl. Despite these improvements, communities continue to face significant challenges in supporting those affected by addiction.
