In the event we can't provide the type of care you need we can still help with making an appropriate referral. Some of the areas we specialize in are: Family counseling emphasizes family relationships as the most important factor in one's psychological health. The goal of Family Counseling is to mediate disputes between individuals, facilitate communication, and ultimately improve the quality of familial relationships. All families have conflict. It's the nature of people living in close proximity. But when normal conflicts turn into daily shouting matches, family members begin hurting each other emotionally (and sometimes physically) and a feeling of anger permeates the household, it's time to do something about it. Blended families in which one or both parents bring to the marriage children from previous relationships present their own unique dynamics. Let's face it. It isn't always the Brady Bunch. But there is help. Sometimes the conflict within a family is caused by the inappropriate or unacceptable behavior of one or more members. The behavior affects everyone. We work with individuals to try to help them with the cause of their actions, we also work with the entire family so they can provide support for that person and for each other, and to learn how to reduce the conflict.
Illness, infidelity, sex, anger, communication problems all can contribute to distress in marriages or other relationships. Marriage counseling or couples counseling can help resolve conflicts and heal wounds. Marriage counseling helps couples understand and resolve conflicts or improve their relationship. Marriage counseling gives couples the tools to communicate better, negotiate differences, problem solve and even argue in a healthier way. Divorce counseling is concerned with helping the couple gain some sense of closure regarding their relationship. It can help the parties grieve their loss preparing them to move into the future, perhaps not as friends, but at least not as enemies. In-Home Family Preservation represents a continuum of programs available within the local departments of social services. These programs are specifically identified for families in crisis whose children are at risk of out-of-home placement. Family preservation actively seeks to obtain or directly provide the critical services needed to enable the family to remain together in a safe and stable environment. Research has shown that once a child is removed from the home, it can be difficult to reunite the family. Families identified with problems regarding child maltreatment are the customers most often served. Other issues such as domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, and mental and physical health are also prevailing conditions and concerns within the family system. EAP's are intended to help employees deal with the broad range of stressors and problems that might disrupt their lives in some way, and to help employees be as productive as they possibly can despite challenging circumstances at home or at work. The term anger management commonly refers to a system of techniques and exercises by which one with excessive or uncontrollable anger can control or reduce the triggers, degrees, and effects of an angered emotional state. Courses in anger management are sometimes mandated to violent criminals by a legal system. Stress management encompasses techniques intended to equip a person with effective coping mechanisms for dealing with psychological stress. Causes of stress: Many things can trigger the stress reaction, including danger, threat, news, illness, as well as significant changes in one's life such as the death of a loved one. Driving Under the Influence (DUI) School DUI school is often ordered by the court for persons convicted of driving drunk. By completing DUI school, individuals can often avoid having points added to their drivers' licenses and have reduced penalties. DUI school is usually a daylong class or a series of shorter classes; depending upon the charges, a DUI school may require 12 hours of instruction or more. Our Alcohol and Drug Treatment programs work with the entire person to improve self-esteem and self-worth, heal core traumas, learn life-skills, gain control over addictive patterns, and improve the health of the body. Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program The program supports patients in maintaining or moving to the least restrictive treatment level. Our goal is to decrease symptoms and improve functioning. The professional staff works with teens to explore positive choices, help them learn healthy coping skills and teach teens how to make good decisions in their lives. Adolescent Continuous Treatment Team Services Continuous Treatment Team is an intensive therapeutic in-home program offering both therapy and case management services. It is designed for families whose children are at-risk of hospitalization, out-of-home placement, or are being transitioned back into the home from placement. The Intensive Focus Program. This prevention program is funded by the Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse services and the Board of Education. This prevention program serves students in grades 2 thru 11. The groups meet for one hour once a week for 12 to 14 weeks. During group time a variety of subjects are discussed. Some of the subjects are communication skills, healthy life styles, manners, responsibility, problem solving skills, goal setting, peer relationships conflict resolution, and the importance of being drug free. Psychological tests offer a formal way to measure traits, feelings, beliefs and abilities that can lead to people’s problems. Some tests assess the presence of certain conditions, such as depression, anxiety, anger control or susceptibility to stress. Other tests measure general well being and provide an overall picture of a person’s personality. A typical psychological assessment includes an interview with a mental health practitioner and one or more formal psychological tests. What is primary healthcare? Primary healthcare is what you receive when you visit your family doctor (general practitioner; GP), midwife, practice nurse, dentist, physiotherapist, counselor or a number of other community-based providers. Your primary healthcare provider is generally your first point of call for medical treatment. When you are referred to a hospital or specialist, this is called secondary care. PCS pediatric services offers well and sick child care to children from newborn to adult. Medications are a part of the recovery process for many people diagnosed with mental illness. Our clinicians and pharmacist educate consumers in organization and use of medications to maximize therapeutic benefits an reduce errors. Individual Therapy affords an opportunity to explore issues of concern in a safe, confidential setting on a one-on-one basis with a trained professional. In the individual format, a single psychotherapist meets with a single client or patient one or more times per week. Patients have the therapist's full attention during an individual session, which may help the session to feel more secure and safe. The individual format encourages patients to explore their difficulties in-depth across multiple sessions in a way that is not possible in group format psychotherapy. Group psychotherapy pairs one or more therapists with five to ten patients. Group psychotherapy sessions with a 'teaching of coping skills' agenda are run like classrooms, with the therapist acting as teacher, and the patients acting like students. Usually the therapist will teach some important concept, and then will encourage the patients to give examples of that concept from their own lives. Group therapy is also often run in a 'support' or 'growth' mode, wherein the therapist will guide the patients in a discussion of things they are struggling with in their lives. Without overpowering the discussion itself, the therapist attempts to shape it so that the participants support one another, model effective ways of managing problems, and get relatively equal chances to talk. Case Managers work with all areas of Professional Care Services, consumer and other community resources to develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment plan. The Crisis Team is staffed by licensed multidiscipinary professionals. These
include RN's, MFCC's and LCSW's, experienced in working with managed care
companies and accessing community resources, providing psychological assessments
and crisis intervention.
Socialization is crucial to the well-being of most people. Those who are coping with mental illness tend to be alienated from friends and family. That feeling of alienation exacerbates symptoms of mental illness, resulting in the person decompensating and perhaps ending up in the hospital or on the street. A drop-in center provides an opportunity for people to make friends with others who will accept them. Members can engage in recreational activities together, or just chat. Although this seems like a somewhat frivolous activity, it is the most important opportunity the drop-in center can offer. It can make the difference between someone maintaining a stable lifestyle in the community or not. For hours of operation and more information call (901) 465-0420 for the Somerville site and (731) 635-8802 for the Ripley site. We are primarily an out-patient treatment program. This means you receive services on an out-patient basis through regularly scheduled appointments at the Center with a therapist, medical doctor, nurse practitioner, or other appropriate professionals. The frequency and types of other services needed will be decided between you and your practitioner following an appropriate assessment period. Clients may request to change their facility or practitioner and all request will be evaluated by management.
